‘Online Monitoring’: Unilever Looks to Exploit Vaseline’s Social Media Breakthrough.
As a product discovered more than 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the humble pot of Vaseline could hardly be considered an clear candidate for social media algorithms.
However, its rise as a popular subject on TikTok has placed it at the forefront of an promotional upheaval, where major corporations are spending big on content creators and putting fewer resources into promoting products in legacy broadcasters.
A Journey from Drilling to Digital
First created commercially in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers using on their skin with a derivative of drilling. Currently, a wave of amateur-created clips have recorded its extensive utilization in “life hacks”.
It has been touted as a solution for polishing footwear or extending perfume longevity, along with a cure for creaky hinges. Its use has even extended to prevent the annoyance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Spotting its digital renaissance, executives at the multinational amplified the hacks by asking their own scientists to test them and letting the content creators in on the results.
Assertions that it diminished the sting of chili on the mouth were given the thumbs up. This was also the case for ideas it could lengthen scent duration and restore leather handbags. Proposals that it might whiten teeth or make eyelashes longer were disproven.
A Plan Built on ‘Social Listening’
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to ramp up funding for content creators.
This observation of social channels to shape commercial tactics has been dubbed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, freshly instated, has stated the intention is to spend 50% of its massive marketing spend on social media content.
Evolving With Audience Behavior
A leading Unilever executive, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of engaging audiences. She said engaging on social media “without spoiling the atmosphere” was essential.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, dating to when neighbors chatted over fences and sharing usage tips.
“The trend is shifting from a broadcast model, where we would just broadcast out … Today, it's numerous dialogues, diverse communities. The shift of the algorithms means that these audiences appear specific, yet they are vast.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by users, talked about by other people, this builds credibility and connection. Content makers are key. We’re really scaling this advocacy model.”
A Seismic Media Shift
The approach indicates seismic changes occurring in how media is consumed, with younger consumers spending more time on digital networks than legacy broadcast and print media.
This change is evidenced by declines in TV and print advertising. Across Britain, commercial funding for leading TV channels have fallen by more than £600m in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
The Rise of the Creator Economy

This strategy is expanding. Advertising spending on influencer marketing is growing fourfold quicker than the broader media sector. Stateside, it has increased by over 100% since 2021 and is forecast to attain multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Even with this transformation, experts said they believed television commercials still played a key part to play, as networks still held the capability to shape the national conversation.
She added: “One of the highest return-on-investment media opportunities is still events like the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ It concerns who commands eyeballs … There is undoubtedly a future for traditional media.”
