Three police officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was found shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
