Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.

City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.

An important political figure said the attack left him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
