At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Security Action on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 people were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the security action, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have likened the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.
